Quick Tips for Packing Your Flat Screen TV for Moving

One of the most exhausting parts of a move is to pack all your precious belongings to protect them from any damage and safely transport them to your destination. While most people worry about packing the bulkier items like furniture, they often neglect the lightweight and fragile flat-screen TV. Though flat-screen televisions may appear easy to pack, at first sight, as they are sleek and not heavy and bulky like the older box CRT TVs, they are among the most challenging items to move.

Flat-screen TVs are expensive and can cost up to a few thousand dollars, and are also costly to repair. Any mistake during packing can scratch or damage them during relocation. Moving experts recommend using the correct packing supplies and techniques to pack the flat-screen TV to avoid accidental damage.

Check out these simple tips to pack a flat-screen TV safely for moving.

Arrange the packing supplies

Gather sufficient moving supplies depending on the TV size. These supplies include packing tape, bubble wrap, screen protector, and moving blankets.

Packing prep

  • Before disassembling, do not forget to take pictures of the back and front of your TV while everything is plugged in. The images of the wiring and cables can come in handy for use as a reference while setting up the TV at the new place, especially if it has various electronic devices like DVD players, gaming consoles, and sound systems connected to it.

  • Remove or unplug all the external cords, coil them up, and use a twist tie to avoid tangling. Label all the cables and wires using masking tape and a marker before packing them separately in transparent plastic bags or small boxes. Remember to remove the batteries from the remotes and pack them along with other accessories.

  • Carefully remove your TV from the wall mount and remove the stand or legs with the help of a screwdriver. Place all the screws safely in the same storage bag as the cords.

  • Wipe clean the TV screen to remove any dirt and dust to avoid scratches. Also, clean all the other TV components before packing them.

Securing the screen

  • Use a flat-screen TV cover to protect the screen.

  • Alternatively, use double layers of bubble wrap or moving blankets to cover and protect the screen and tightly secure them using packing tape or rope to avoid slipping.

  • Secure the edges with cardboard or foam protectors.

Packing the TV

  • Place some silica gel packets around the TV before wrapping to keep interiors dry and prevent moisture damage.

  • After wrapping the TV, place it gently inside the appropriate packing box along with the stand and fill the empty spaces, if any, using dish towels, t-shirts, or socks to prevent shifting during the move.

  • Secure the box’s edges using the box tape.

Loading it into the moving truck

  • Keep the flat-screen TV box in the upright position.

  • Place the TV box between other boxes in a vertical position. Ensure that these are sturdy boxes to stop your TV from shaking during transit.
