Eliminating Unwanted Possessions Before a Move

Being in the moving business, we see a lot of people move things that don't represent things that 'spark joy.' As warmer weather is looming on the horizon, and because many people are home, this is a great time to purge your home of unwanted items, whether you're moving or not. Regardless of whether or not you intend to move any time soon, you still have to live in your home, so it should be the happiest place you can make it.

While our belongings can bring us great joy, having too many possessions in our home can bring us frustration, depression, the potential for accidents, hiding places for vermin, and general emotional blight. So, the rewards of eliminating too many possessions can be significant.

The question is, how can a person process and distribute items which they no longer use? Here are some suggestions for getting rid of those items you no longer want. Note here that your choices will be somewhat dictated by the amount of time and energy you're willing to devote to certain things.

Donation vs. throwing away

Donation can be a little bit tricky. You don't want to use a donation charity as a means to rid yourself of trash. If your vacuum cleaner is missing a wheel, for example, don't donate it to charity, as they'll have to turn around and throw it away.  Your options are to either replace the missing wheel, find someone who is willing to take the vacuum and replace the wheel themselves or throw the vacuum away. Remember what we said about how much effort you're ready to invest in getting rid of items? That broken vacuum can be hauled to the curb during bulk trash pickup.

Recycle

There are several different places you can take items to recycle, including appliances, electronics, and other things. It's worth the effort to do so. Many of these places rely on donations to help others.

Give away to friends and family

The most effective way to ask friends or family if they are interested in an item is to tell them they're welcome to it. Some ineffective ways to offer it to them is to say how much money you paid for it, how adorable it is, how badly you need to get it out of your house, or some other such nonsense.  If you offer someone a sofa and it's filthy, broken, or has an odor, you're not helping that person, only yourself.

Sell

Sales can be a little bit tricky given the current pandemic, but Offer Up, Swip Swap, Craigslist, eBay, and other sales websites can put you in touch with people who want the items you no longer need. Again, consider the amount of time and effort you're going to put into the selling of the article to determine whether or not it's worth it.

Regardless of whether or not you need the help of a moving company, having your home cleared of items you no longer want will bring simplification and a positive feeling in your home.
